If you drove to Tasjeel expecting to flash your card, pay the AED 100, and skip the queue you’re not alone. And you’re not wrong for being caught off guard.
As of last week, the RTA has made pre-booking mandatory for vehicle inspections at all technical testing centers across Dubai. That casual walk-in approach most of us have relied on for years? It’s officially over at a growing number of locations and even the AED 100 “convenience fee” workaround has been seriously restricted.
What Actually Changed
The RTA rolled out the Vehicle Inspection Appointment Booking service across 27 of Dubai’s 28 technical testing centers. The only place still exempt is Tasjeel Hatta which is probably not your nearest branch.
Here’s how it now breaks down:
– 19 centers still allow walk-ins, but you’ll pay an extra AED 100 on top of the standard inspection fee.
– 8 centers are pre-booking only, no walk-ins at all, full stop.
The centres with zero walk-in option include some busy, well-known locations:
– Tasjeel Al Twar
– Tasjeel Al Mankhool
– Wasel Arabian Centre (Al Arabian Centre & Nad Al Hamar)
– Shamil Al Adid, Al Muhaisnah, and Nad Al Hamar
– Al Mumayaz Vehicle Testing Al Mizhar
So if your nearest branch happens to be one of these eight, there’s no option to just show up, booked appointment or turn around!
What About the VIP Lane?
The appointment rule applies to all customer and vehicle categories, including premium service users. Even VIP lane customers need a pre-booked slot. The old trick of paying extra to jump the queue on your own schedule isn’t on the table anymore.
Why RTA Did This
The RTA tested this at Tasjeel Al Qusais and Al Barsha from October 2024. The results were significant enough to push it citywide:
– 46% reduction in average waiting times
– 15% decrease in walk-in congestion relative to total capacity
– Revenue stayed stable despite fewer total transactions
From the RTA’s perspective, it worked. For the majority of customers who plan ahead, it genuinely does cut wait times. For those of us who preferred rolling in on our own schedule, that flexibility now costs you either AED 100 extra or a rejected entry altogether.
Who’s Exempt?
Two groups are exempt from the booking requirement entirely:
– People of Determination with Dubai-registered vehicles
– Senior citizens and residents, 60 years old or above, with Dubai-registered vehicles
Everyone else books in advance.
How to Book Your Inspection
Three ways to get it done:
1. RTA Dubai App. Go to Services → Vehicle Licensing → Vehicle Testing. You’ll need UAE Pass or an RTA account login.
2. Website rta.ae, same navigation path.
3. At the center. You can still physically go to the testing center to book an appointment at the booth, but you’ll be booking a future slot, not getting inspected on the spot.
You’ll need Mulkiya handy for this. Once confirmed, you get an SMS and email with your slot details.
The Bottom Line
The days of treating Tasjeel like a drive-through swinging by when it suits you, pay the extra hundred, get it done are effectively over for most locations. The system is shifting toward scheduled appointments, and the RTA isn’t leaving much room to opt out.
Plan it like you plan everything else. Book ahead, show up at your time, and you’ll likely get through faster than ever. Just don’t expect to wing it anymore.
