Mercedes-Benz built the W124. Porsche co-built this one.
The 500 E was too wide for the line at Sindelfingen, so the bodies went across Stuttgart to Porsche at Zuffenhausen, were assembled by hand, and came back for paint.
Eighteen days a car. It is the only Mercedes saloon with a Porsche build behind it.
Under the bonnet is the M119. Five litres, 32 valves, four cams, 326hp and 480Nm through a four speed automatic. About six seconds to 100km/h, in 1992, in a car with rear seat headrests. The arches are flared over a wider track, it sits 23mm lower than an ordinary 124, and the front brakes came off the 500 SL. Nothing on the boot lid tells you any of it.
Blue Black metallic, paint code 199, over anthracite leather. It reads black until the light catches it. Built February 1992 and ordered for Japan, which the build sheet says twice, and Japan is the best thing that can happen to a car of this age.
No salt, no sun, and an ownership culture that services on schedule whether the car needs it or not. 128,000km and accident free.
Inside it is a strict four seater. Two individual seats in the back with a fixed wooden console between them, exactly as Porsche built it. The interior is original throughout and the dashboard is excellent, which on a thirty four year old car is the part you cannot buy back. Electric sliding roof, memory seats both sides and heated, electric steering column, automatic climate, and the CD changer still in the boot.
Condition, plainly. Several panels have been painted and a few want correction to be right. The wood needs restoring to be perfect. There is a small tear in the driver’s side rear seat. An AMG exhaust is fitted. Engine and gearbox are smooth. It is a car to enjoy finishing rather than a car somebody else has finished for you, and it is priced that way.
A shade over ten thousand 500 Es were built in five years. They are thirty odd years old and nobody is building another, which is why honest, accident free cars with original interiors have been going one way.
