The Best Place to Buy a Used Car in the UAE: Why Free Listings Mean More Choice

The best place to buy a used car in the UAE is where every seller can list. Why ad fees keep cars offline at every price, and why free listing shows you more.

Say you’re after a 2018 Land Cruiser GXR. Or a W123 Mercedes for weekend drives. Or just a clean Corolla to get to work. You search the big sites and get the same few dealers, the same photos and the same cars that were there last month.

Meanwhile, the neighbour’s Land Cruiser sits in the basement with a “for sale” sign in the window. He’d sell to the right person, but he’s never posted it online, because posting it would cost him money before anyone had even called.

There are a lot of cars like his. The UAE had 4.56 million active vehicles by mid-2025, about 390,000 more than a year earlier, according to Salik data reported by Khaleej Times. Some of those cars are for sale at any given time, but only a share of them ever make it online. Which share you see depends on where you look.

The cars you never see

On the UAE’s largest classifieds site, a private seller pays for each car they advertise, and the site’s own guide quotes AED 599 for 30 days. Each extra ad is charged, and boosts to push an ad up the page cost more. All of it is paid before a single buyer has shown interest.

That fee puts sellers off at both ends of the market. For someone selling a AED 10,000 car, AED 599 is about 6% of the price, gone before the phone rings. For someone selling a AED 400,000 classic, the fee is small, but the wait isn’t. Rare and expensive cars can take months to find the right buyer, and every time the ad runs out it has to be paid for again.

In between, three more kinds of seller have their own reasons to stay offline:

  • The owner who’s only testing the market. They’d sell at the right price but aren’t in a hurry, and paying to maybe sell isn’t worth it to them.
  • The dealer or collector with a lot of stock. When every extra ad costs money, you list your fastest sellers and leave the rest off.
  • The seller of something niche. A project car, a modified car or an export-spec import has few buyers and a long sale ahead of it, so the fee is hard to justify.

None of these are bad cars. Their owners just didn’t think paying up front was worth it. Economists who study marketplaces describe exactly this: a fixed fee to join decides who shows up at all, separately from whether anyone ends up trading. When Yahoo! Auctions began charging sellers a listing fee in 2001, its listings “fell considerably”. The same study found that sites with more listings drew more visitors.

Not every site charges the same way. Some have a free basic ad with limits, such as one live ad at a time, a few photos and no WhatsApp button. Others price the ad by the car’s value, and a few take a commission of around 3 to 5% when the car sells. The pattern holds, though: the more it costs to list, the more cars stay offline.

Where to buy a used car in the UAE: your options

There are four main places to look, and each one shows you a different slice of the market.

Big classifieds sites have the biggest audiences and a lot of dealer stock. On the largest of them private sellers pay per ad, so you see the sellers who were willing to pay.

Used-car dealers and certified programmes give you inspected cars, sometimes a warranty, and finance on the spot. You pay for that in the price, and your choice is whatever that dealer has in stock.

Instant-buyer resale sites buy cars from owners, recondition some and sell them on. The cars are usually inspected, but you only see what one company bought.

Free-to-list marketplaces like Pistons.AE work like the big classifieds, with you dealing with the owner or dealer directly. The difference is that listing costs the seller nothing, so cars turn up whose owners would never have paid for an ad.

Why free listing means more choice, at every price

Free listing doesn’t make any car cheaper, and we won’t pretend it does. Sellers set their own prices on Pistons.AE, just as they do everywhere else. What changes is how much of the market you get to see.

With no fee, the seller of a AED 9,000 Yaris, the collector with a 1972 Mercedes and the dealer with forty cars on the lot can all list. Dealers list free with no limit, so there’s no reason to hold stock back: you see the whole lot, not just the three cars they paid to promote. Slow-selling cars stay visible too. A paid ad runs out and often isn’t renewed, but a free listing can stay up until the right buyer comes along, which matters most for the rare cars that take the longest to sell.

You can already see this in the stock. The 104 cars for sale on Pistons.AE today come from 45 different sellers and cover 30 makes, spread across the whole market:

That’s everyday cars and serious ones side by side. Because owners of rare cars don’t have to pay to wait, 37 of those cars date from 2001 or earlier, which is why Pistons.AE has a whole section for classic cars.

Finding and checking the right car on Pistons.AE

A wider choice only helps if you can narrow it down and trust what you pick. Here’s how to go from search to keys:

  1. Search the whole range at once. Browse every car for sale and filter by make, model, year, price, emirate and specs, or start from classic cars.
  2. Check the asking price against similar cars. Look up the model in the Price Index to see what other sellers are asking for the same car by year and mileage, so you know before you call whether a price is high, low or in line.
  3. Ask people who own one. Post in the forums to find out what usually goes wrong on that model and what to look at on a viewing.
  4. Contact the seller the way they’ve chosen. Each listing shows Call, WhatsApp or Pistons chat. If you agree anything in chat, it’s there in writing later.
  5. See the car, and check its history. Never pay a deposit on a car you haven’t seen. Our guide to checking a used car’s history in the UAE covers accident records, mileage and the documents to ask for.
  6. Get an inspection at a garage you choose. Pick one from the garage directory instead of going to the seller’s mechanic. Garages there can’t pay for a better spot.
  7. Pay only when ownership is transferred to you. Make sure the name on the registration card (mulkiya) matches the seller’s Emirates ID, then hand over the money at the RTA transfer, not before.

If a listing looks wrong, or the car has clearly already gone, use the report button on the listing and it comes straight to us. Pistons.AE doesn’t buy or sell cars itself. The deal is between you and the seller.

When to look somewhere else as well

Pistons.AE is newer and smaller than the long-established sites, so on any given day it won’t have every car. If you need one exact trim and colour this week, search the bigger sites as well. If you want a warranty and finance sorted in one place, a dealer or certified-used programme will cost more but take care of the paperwork for you.

The best approach is to check more than one site. Make Pistons.AE one of them, because it shows you cars the paid sites often don’t.

FAQ

What is the best place to buy a used car in the UAE?

The place where the most sellers can list. When sellers have to pay up front to advertise, many cars never go online, at every price. On a free-to-list marketplace like Pistons.AE, any private seller or dealer can list as many cars as they like, so you see a broader collection. Most buyers check more than one site.

What is the best website to buy used cars in the UAE?

It depends on what you want. For the biggest audience, the large classifieds. For a warranty and finance, a certified dealer. For the broadest mix of cars from private owners and dealers, with no listing fees holding sellers back, Pistons.AE.

Why don’t I see every car for sale online?

Because many sites charge the seller before anyone has called. The largest UAE classifieds site quotes AED 599 for 30 days. Sellers of cheap cars, owners of rare cars that take months to sell, people only testing the market and dealers with lots of stock all have reasons not to pay, so their cars stay offline.

Are cars cheaper on Pistons.AE?

No. Sellers set their own prices on Pistons.AE, the same as anywhere else. The difference is how many cars get listed: with no fee to pay, more sellers list, in every price bracket, so you have more to choose from.

Does Pistons.AE only have cheap cars?

No. Cars on Pistons.AE range from under AED 30,000 to over AED 400,000, from everyday cars to rare classics, listed by private owners and dealers. Free listing helps every kind of seller, not one segment.

Where can I buy cheap used cars in the UAE?

Check sites where listing is free as well as the big classifieds, because a paid ad costs the seller of a cheap car a large share of its price and many of them skip it. On Pistons.AE you can filter any search by price.

Is it free to buy a car on Pistons.AE?

Yes. Pistons.AE charges buyers nothing and takes no commission from either side. You agree the price with the seller directly.

How do I avoid scams when buying a used car in the UAE?

See the car before paying anything, check its history, get an independent inspection, make sure the seller is the registered owner, and only pay when ownership is transferred at the RTA.
